The leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) called on Iran to de-escalate tensions, while emphasizing Israel's right to self-defense.
According to News1 and others on the 16th (local time), in a joint statement at the G7 summit held in Canada, the leaders declared, "We affirm that Israel has the right to defend itself," and "We once again express our support for Israel's security."
Regarding Iran, the statement continued, "We have consistently made it clear that Iran can never possess nuclear weapons" and "We urge that a resolution to the Iran crisis leads to a broad de-escalation of hostilities across the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza."
The statement was also agreed to by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Initially, it had been reported that President Trump had decided not to sign the joint statement urging de-escalation of tensions between Iran and Israel.
