The Ethereum market is increasingly showing a speculative structure driven by derivatives rather than spot demand, according to CryptoQuant contributor Darkfost.

In an analysis published June 5, Darkfost wrote that broader markets remain in a wait-and-see mode amid geopolitical and economic uncertainty. Activity in the derivatives market, however, has stayed elevated. Ethereum futures open interest stands at about 6.4 million ETH, close to the roughly 7.8 million ETH peak reached in July 2025. The figure has gradually recovered after falling to about 5 million ETH in October 2025.

Binance accounted for about 2.3 million ETH of open interest, or roughly 36% of the total, underscoring its dominant share of the derivatives market.

A key indicator was the sharp expansion of futures trading relative to spot. On Binance, the spot-to-futures volume ratio fell to 0.13, the lowest level this year. That means futures volume is about seven times larger than spot volume. For every $1 traded in the spot market, roughly $7 is traded in futures.

The structure suggests recent price moves are being driven more by speculative demand than by real demand, Darkfost wrote. In a highly leveraged market, events such as position liquidations can amplify volatility rather than improve stability.

He added that derivatives-led trading is currently outweighing spot-based demand in Ethereum, leaving the market more exposed to rising volatility than to a stable upswing.
