Iran warned it could raise uranium enrichment to 90%, a weapons-grade level, if it comes under attack again. The issue of Tehran’s right to enrich uranium is emerging as a central sticking point in negotiations with the US.
BlockBeats, a cryptocurrency-focused media outlet, reported on May 12 that Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesman for the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said Tehran could consider lifting enrichment to 90% as one of its response options if it is attacked again.
He added that the matter will be discussed in parliament.
The dispute over uranium enrichment rights has become the biggest source of friction in recent US-Iran talks, according to market analysis.
Iran reiterated the previous day that its right to enrich uranium is “not subject to negotiation.” The US, by contrast, has maintained that Iran should either ship its highly enriched uranium abroad or halt enrichment activities for at least 20 years.
Meanwhile, betting continues on prediction market platform Polymarket over when Iran will agree to stop uranium enrichment. PolyBeats, a BlockBeats affiliate, put the odds of a deal by the end of May at 7%, by the end of June at 28%, and by the end of this year at 54%.
