President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized cooperation at their first summit, signaling optimism about improved relations between the U.S. and China.

Speaking at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on May 13, Trump said relations between the two countries would become better than ever before, according to Bloomberg. He also described Xi as a “great leader.”

Xi said the two nations should be partners rather than rivals. They should help each other succeed and prosper together, he said.

He added that major countries in a new era must find the right way to coexist.

The meeting marked the first visit to China by a sitting U.S. president in about a decade. The two leaders began formal talks at the Great Hall of the People, near Tiananmen Square, after reviewing an honor guard and attending a welcoming ceremony.

Trump also mentioned a business delegation that included Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang and Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk.

He said U.S. business leaders came to show respect for China and Xi. They are seeking to expand trade and business with China, he said, and the U.S. would cooperate on the basis of full reciprocity.
