The U.S. government has approved Nvidia Corp. to sell its high-performance H200 artificial intelligence chips to about 10 Chinese companies, Reuters reported.
Reuters, citing multiple sources, reported on May 14 that the U.S. approved sales of Nvidia's H200 AI chips to roughly 10 Chinese companies, including Tencent Holdings Ltd., Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and ByteDance Ltd. Some distributors, including Lenovo Group Ltd. and Foxconn, also received approval to sell the H200.
The approved companies can buy the H200 directly from Nvidia or through intermediaries. The purchase cap is about 75,000 chips per company.
No H200 shipments have been made so far, Reuters reported. The news agency said the U.S.-China technology rivalry is affecting even approved transactions, leaving Nvidia caught between the two countries' competing priorities.
The matter is also drawing attention as Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang visits China. Huang was not initially included on the White House delegation list for the China trip, but joined the visit after being invited directly by U.S. President Donald Trump.
