The United Arab Emirates strongly rejected Iran’s claims and what it described as efforts to justify attacks against the Gulf state, signaling renewed strain in the Middle East.

In a statement issued on May 15, the UAE said it fully rejects claims made by Iran during a BRICS meeting, as well as attempts to justify attacks targeting the UAE.

The UAE added that it retains all sovereign, legal, diplomatic and military rights to respond to any threat or hostile act by Iran.

Recent BRICS talks are reported to have exposed friction between Iran and the UAE over Middle East issues.

Iran has previously alleged that the UAE and some Gulf states were working with the US and Israel in ways that threatened its security.

The UAE has dismissed those accusations as baseless and signaled it could respond forcefully.

Markets are closely watching whether deeper tensions between Iran and the UAE, along with strains around the Strait of Hormuz, will affect international oil prices and global financial markets.
