President Donald Trump said May 18 that negotiations to end the conflict with Iran were close to a deal and that he would be satisfied if any agreement barred Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Trump made the remarks at a White House event on lowering drug prices when asked why he had posted on social media that he would delay the resumption of a military attack on Iran scheduled for May 19.

He said the leader of a US ally in the Middle East had asked him to postpone the attack because negotiations with Iran were on the verge of conclusion. Trump said the leader asked whether the strike could be delayed for a very short period of two to three days. He added that if the US could do that and Iran did not acquire nuclear weapons, "and if they are satisfied, then we will probably be satisfied."
