Iran said it is working with Oman and international organizations to build a security mechanism for the Strait of Hormuz, as debate continues over control of Middle East shipping routes.

Walter Bloomberg reported on May 20 that an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Tehran is cooperating with Oman and international specialized bodies to establish a framework aimed at ensuring sustainable security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has recently kept pressing the need for a system to manage traffic through the strait and guarantee safe passage.

Tehran had previously unveiled plans for a new framework to manage the strait, including designated shipping lanes and a transit fee system.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key oil shipping route that carries about 20% of global seaborne crude flows.

As tensions between the US and Iran escalate, the safety of transit through the strait and the stability of oil supply chains have emerged as major global risks.

Markets are focused on how cooperation talks between Iran and Oman, along with changes to the strait's control framework, could affect international oil prices and the global shipping market.
