An Iran-linked operative has been charged in an alleged plot to assassinate Ivanka Trump, the eldest daughter of U.S. President Donald Trump, the New York Post reported on May 22. The alleged plot was described as retaliation for the killing of Qassem Soleimani, the late commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force, in a U.S. drone strike six years ago.
The newspaper said Mohammad Baker Saad Daoud Alsaadi, an Iraqi national, was arrested in Turkey on May 15 and extradited to the US. The Justice Department charged him with 18 attempted acts of terrorism and assassination across the US and Europe.
Investigators found that Alsaadi had openly expressed his intention to kill Ivanka Trump as revenge against the Trump family. He had obtained blueprints for the $24 million Florida home where she lives with her husband, Jared Kushner. He also posted an Arabic-language warning on X alongside a map of the area, writing that the Secret Service "will not be able to protect you" and that "our revenge is only a matter of time."
Entifadh Qanbar, a former attaché at the Iraqi Embassy in Washington, said that after Soleimani's death, Alsaadi had gone around saying, "Just as Trump burned our house, we must burn Trump's house by killing Ivanka." Alsaadi viewed Soleimani as a father figure and was identified as a key operative working with both Kataib Hezbollah, an Iraqi armed faction, and Iran's IRGC. He also allegedly obtained an Iraqi government diplomatic passport by posing as a religious travel agent and used it to make contact with terrorist groups around the world.
The Justice Department said Alsaadi planned and directed multiple attacks, including a Molotov cocktail attack on BNY Mellon in Amsterdam in March, a shooting at the US Consulate in Toronto and a bombing at a synagogue in Liege, Belgium. Ivanka Trump's conversion to Orthodox Judaism was also cited as a major reason she was targeted.
Alsaadi is being held in solitary confinement at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where the report said Luigi Mangione and former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro are also detained. The White House has not issued an official comment on the alleged assassination plot.
