The US Navy is providing limited support for some commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report. Markets are watching for a possible increase in oil shipping risks as tensions rise in the Middle East.

Walter Bloomberg reported on May 26 that the US Navy is currently offering limited assistance to help commercial ships move safely through the Strait of Hormuz. The vessels receiving support reportedly include a Greek very large crude carrier carrying 2 million barrels of oil bound for India.

US authorities said the move does not amount to a full resumption of Project Freedom, a previous maritime escort operation. They added that about 12 more vessels are set to receive additional support over the next several days as risks in the Middle East rise.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for global oil shipments. Concerns over maritime transport safety have grown amid rising tensions between the US and Iran and an increased risk of military clashes in Lebanon and Iraq.

Market participants say traffic through the Strait of Hormuz could become a key driver for global financial markets, including international oil prices and the dollar.
