Ethereum could see its competitive position erode if it fails to show progress on privacy within the next 12 months, as the blockchain pushes the feature as its next key growth strategy. The market is increasingly focused on privacy tools as a way to expand demand from institutional investors.

CryptoSlate, a digital-asset news outlet, reported on May 27 that Ethereum has been making stronger privacy features a central strategy as it faces stagnant prices and pressure from a decline in market share.

Privacy-focused cryptocurrencies such as Zcash and Monero are drawing market attention, the report said, underscoring the growing need for Ethereum to improve transaction confidentiality as well. Without privacy features that meet institutional investors' requirements, Ethereum could struggle to maintain its position as a base settlement layer.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently outlined a privacy technology roadmap. It includes FOCIL, designed to prevent transaction censorship; Account Abstraction and keyed nonces, aimed at anonymizing account behavior patterns; and Kohaku, a wallet-layer privacy technology.

The market sees Ethereum focusing not only on scalability and fees but also on strengthening its privacy edge. Still, some expect it may take time for those technologies to be deployed in live services, given the regulatory environment and the complexity of implementation.
