President Donald Trump convened a meeting on a peace agreement with Iran but did not reach a decision, the New York Times reported.

The newspaper reported on May 29 that the White House Situation Room meeting ended without a breakthrough.

Citing administration officials, the Times said the meeting lasted about two hours, but Trump made no decision on an agreement with Iran. The administration believes the US and Iran are close to a deal, though some issues remain under discussion, including the release of frozen Iranian funds.

Earlier that morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that he would meet in the Situation Room to make a final decision on signing a memorandum of understanding, or MOU, to end the conflict with Iran.

He again outlined the conditions for an agreement, including barring Iran from possessing nuclear weapons, immediately opening the Strait of Hormuz without transit fees, and a US-led recovery and destruction of Iran's highly enriched uranium.

Iran disputed Trump's description of the terms. Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, told state media that the current talks with the US are proceeding on a limited basis and do not include the nuclear issue.

Whether the two sides can reach an agreement to end the conflict remains unclear.
