President Donald Trump has told aides he will not restart a full-scale war with Iran unless an Iranian attack kills US troops, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The newspaper said on June 3 that Trump recently told advisers he could consider ending the current ceasefire if Iran kills US service members.

Even so, Trump has maintained that the ceasefire between the US and Iran remains in effect despite sporadic military clashes in recent weeks.

US officials said Trump does not want the conflict in the Middle East to expand into a broader war. They said he is willing to tolerate localized clashes if necessary while avoiding a large-scale military confrontation.

The Journal said that stance suggests Trump could allow limited fighting to continue for weeks or months to avoid a wider war in the region.

The US and Iran are continuing talks on extending the ceasefire and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Trump also recently said an agreement could be reached within a week, signaling hope for a diplomatic solution.
