Expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts are retreating in the US Treasury market. Strong economic data and persistent inflation risks are fueling views that the benchmark rate could stay higher for longer than previously expected.

Walter Bloomberg reported on June 9 that the yield on the US two-year Treasury note had climbed above 4.1%, with markets beginning to price in some possibility of another rate increase this year.

Bond traders say recent economic data has been stronger than expected and inflation pressures have yet to fully fade.

That has prompted arguments that current monetary policy may no longer be sufficiently restrictive.

Some market participants also worry that under incoming Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, the central bank could end up responding too late to renewed price pressures.

Other investors argue that the neutral rate — the level that neither overheats nor slows the economy — may be higher than previously thought, underscoring the need to reassess the entire Treasury yield curve.

Market participants are looking to upcoming inflation and employment data, along with moves in energy prices, as key variables in determining the Fed's rate path.
