Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, ruled out signing an agreement with the US on Sunday and sharply criticized President Donald Trump.

CNN reported June 13 that the IRGC formally denied speculation that Iran would sign an agreement with the US on Sunday. The group described Trump’s push for a signing that day as unusually stubborn.

In a Telegram post, the IRGC called the pressure over the timetable “a test for Iran’s negotiating team.” It said Trump unilaterally pushed ahead with the announcement even though the Iranian delegation had made clear that the memorandum of understanding had not been finalized and that a Sunday signing was out of the question.

The IRGC also claimed Trump tried to force the signing schedule to coincide with his June 14 birthday.

It criticized the move as an attempt to use the event symbolically, saying Trump’s insistence may have been driven by a desire to turn a diplomatic negotiation into a personal publicity event.
