The U.S. military launched a surprise airstrike on key military facilities in mainland Iran in retaliation for attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran immediately disputed the operation, saying its forces repelled the attack, as military tensions between the two countries reached a peak.

Walter Bloomberg reported on June 26 that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, said U.S. forces struck Sirik Island near the Strait of Hormuz but that Iranian troops had successfully repelled the attack.

Reuters reported the same day that U.S. Central Command, or CENTCOM, said in a statement that U.S. aircraft struck missile and drone storage facilities in Iran as well as coastal radar sites. CENTCOM described the operation as a legitimate response to Iran's recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. officials said the airstrike operation has concluded.
