President Donald Trump said Iran is eager to strike a deal with the US.
Speaking at the America 250 Independence Day event at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota on July 3, Trump praised US military power. "We built the strongest military in the world, and we won two world wars," he said.
Turning to recent geopolitical conflicts, Trump said the US "defeated Venezuela in a day" and "delivered a devastating blow to Iran." He said Tehran now "desperately wants" a compromise with Washington.
Trump also mentioned the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, saying the US paused negotiations for a week so "they could hold the funeral" because "we are generous."
He also attacked ideological divisions at home, saying a communist threat is reemerging in the US, including from people who entered the country holding beliefs "directly opposed to our way of life and our great success."
Trump went on to call communism the deadliest and greatest threat facing the US, saying it surpasses World Wars I and II, the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. "America will never become a communist country," he added.
Trump also laid out his political ambitions for the upcoming midterm elections. He said Republicans would not lose unless they "defeat ourselves."
He also claimed that if the Senate filibuster is abolished and the Save America Act is passed, Republicans would not lose an election for the next 100 years.
