The US government transferred about $288 million of seized Bitcoin and Ether to Coinbase Prime, according to on-chain data.

Decrypt reported on July 14, citing blockchain analytics firm Arkham, that the US government moved the assets to Coinbase Prime on July 13.

The transfer included about 3,800 Bitcoin worth $235 million and about 30,000 Ether worth $53 million. The assets were seized in multiple criminal cases.

The Bitcoin came from funds seized in connection with Ryan Farace, identified as a dark-web drug dealer, and the defunct exchange BTC-e. The funds were routed through an intermediate wallet before reaching Coinbase Prime. The Ether was tied to a $54 million money-laundering case involving former Oracle employee Brian Krusen and was sent directly to a Coinbase Prime deposit address.

Markets are watching whether the transfer signals preparations for a sale or simply a custody move. Coinbase Prime is the platform the US government selected to custody and trade forfeited digital assets, so a transfer there does not necessarily indicate an imminent sale.

Tim Sun, a senior researcher at HashKey, said some market participants view the move as a potential sell signal. It remains unclear whether the inflow was intended to prepare for a sale or to consolidate and store seized assets.

Decrypt said the assets transferred this time do not appear to be part of reserves that have completed final forfeiture procedures. Instead, they appear to be tied to criminal cases that are still ongoing. Sun added that the market should distinguish between Bitcoin held in reserves and the broader digital-asset holdings of the US government.

Ether is also not covered by the US strategic Bitcoin reserve framework. Other digital assets, including Ether, are managed separately as a digital-asset stockpile that the Treasury can administer within its legal authority.

Arkham said US government wallets still hold $20.6 billion in digital assets, including 324,552 Bitcoin. Against those total holdings, the $288 million transfer was relatively small.
