China’s largest memory-chip maker, ChangXin Memory Technologies, or CXMT, is considering building a new memory semiconductor plant in Beijing, Reuters reported on August 3, citing multiple sources.
The move is aimed at meeting rising global demand for memory chips.
Reuters said CXMT is weighing a plan to build a 12-inch memory chip plant in Yizhuang, in southeastern Beijing.
The company is discussing financing arrangements with the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, and some state-owned companies have expressed interest in investing.
The talks remain at an early stage, and the size of the investment and funding structure could still change.
The planned Beijing plant’s exact production capacity and investment amount have not been disclosed.
Industry estimates put the cost of building a single advanced memory plant at more than $10 billion.
CXMT is also pursuing new plants in Hefei, Anhui province, where it is headquartered, and in Shanghai.
The company currently operates three plants, including in Hefei, each with monthly capacity of 100,000 wafers, the sources said.
If all the planned plants come online, monthly production capacity will double to about 600,000 wafers.
Separately, CXMT listed on Shanghai’s Star Market, the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s technology-focused board, on July 27.
On its debut, the company’s market capitalization reached 3.28 trillion yuan, or about $456 billion, making it the most valuable listed company on mainland China’s stock market.
