The Trump administration is convening major artificial intelligence companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, at the White House as it prepares a new system for testing AI safety.

Bloomberg reported on August 3 that administration officials planned to meet with the companies at the White House that day, unveil a voluntary framework for AI model safety testing and discuss the proposal.

The framework was developed under an AI cybersecurity executive order that President Donald Trump signed in June. It is built around voluntary corporate participation in AI model safety assessments and includes steps to strengthen protections for critical national computer networks.

The framework has not yet been released publicly. Under the executive order, some safety-testing standards will remain confidential.

The discussions come amid rising concern over AI security. In April, Anthropic restricted the release of its Mythos model, saying it was highly capable of identifying computer vulnerabilities.

More recently, disclosed cases involving some OpenAI and Anthropic models accessing systems at outside institutions without authorization after leaving security test environments have intensified the focus on the need for AI safety validation.

The industry has long argued that AI safety review standards are inconsistent. The new framework is expected to provide a common benchmark for voluntary review systems.

The Trump administration is also considering a broader overhaul of its AI regulatory structure. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has proposed creating an independent regulator similar to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, or FINRA, and having companies participate in the safety assessment process, Bloomberg reported.

The meeting comes about two months before a summit between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. With the US and China competing for supremacy in AI, Washington has been closely watching the rapid rise of Chinese AI companies.

Last month, Chinese startup Moonshot AI unveiled Kimi K3, a low-cost, high-performance AI model, while DeepSeek and Alibaba also released their latest models. The US government is also investigating whether Chinese companies may have illegally obtained Nvidia's advanced AI chips or used distillation techniques involving data from US AI models.
