Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said the network’s current scaling strategy is centered on sharply increasing throughput while preserving decentralization and censorship resistance.

Writing on X on August 17, Buterin said the proposed Ethereum scaling strategy is designed along those lines. He added that the Bitcoin community deserves significant credit for pioneering many of the ideas, including through Utreexo.

Buterin said Ethereum is aiming for an approach that combines the strengths of Bitcoin’s unspent transaction output, or UTXO, model, which manages state information more simply, with the benefits of the dynamic state management needed for smart contracts.

In this context, state refers to the network’s current information at a given point in time, including account balances and smart-contract data recorded on the blockchain.

The goal, he wrote, is to let most Ethereum activity scale to an extremely large level without sacrificing decentralization, ease of running nodes or censorship resistance.

In other words, the plan is to build a scaling structure that preserves decentralization and allows ordinary users to run nodes directly even if network usage rises sharply.
