Altcoins’ combined market capitalization has surged more than 24% in three days, prompting analysis that the cryptocurrency market may be entering the early stages of an “altseason.”
CryptoQuant contributor Darkfost wrote on Aug. 23 that $215 billion flowed into the altcoin market between Aug. 19 and Aug. 22. Total2, a measure of total cryptocurrency market capitalization excluding Bitcoin, climbed back above $1 trillion. Smaller-cap and mid-cap altcoins led the advance.
Technical indicators also point to a broader market recovery. During the bearish stretch that followed November 2025, roughly 80% to 85% of altcoins traded below their 200-day moving average, or 200-DMA, a long-term trend gauge. Now, 56% of altcoins listed on Binance are trading above that level. In Darkfost’s view, that suggests the rebound is not confined to a small number of tokens and may reflect a broader market turn.
Darkfost identified President Donald Trump’s cryptocurrency-related remarks as a catalyst for the latest rebound. After Trump mentioned the possibility of large-scale US Bitcoin purchases on Aug. 19 and urged Congress to pass the CLARITY Act, liquidity flowed quickly into altcoins. Thin trading volumes at the time and the exhaustion of much of the selling pressure also magnified the rally.
Looking at past cycles, Darkfost said gains of this scale are among the signals that tend to appear in the early phase of an altseason. The rally, once centered on Bitcoin, is now spreading across the broader altcoin market. More than half of listed tokens have also reclaimed their long-term moving averages, suggesting the market’s upside momentum is broadening.
Still, the sharp rise in a short period leaves room for a correction. Darkfost said the market has entered an overbought zone that may require a short-term pullback, though further opportunities could emerge if altcoins maintain strong momentum.
