OpenAI is not expected to pursue an initial public offering this year as it prioritizes work on artificial intelligence safety and alignment.

CoinDesk reported on September 13 that OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman told Fortune that “given everything going on related to safety, now is not the right time to go public” and that he does not feel pressure to list the company.

That leaves an OpenAI IPO likely delayed until 2027 at the earliest.

Altman said there is still substantial work to do on safety and alignment, as well as on how the industry and governments should work together.

The AI industry has also seen growing calls to slow the pace of the development race. Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei has argued that AI competition needs to slow, a view Altman and Elon Musk have also supported.
