Reuters reported on September 26 that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a social media post that the strait could be reopened only if Iran’s conditions were met. He added that only a negotiated solution could break the deadlock, underscoring the need for diplomacy.
Iran presented a peace proposal at the United Nations General Assembly in New York last week and delivered it to the U.S. through Qatari mediators. The proposal called for reopening the Strait of Hormuz after a seven-day preparation period and halting regional fighting if an agreement was reached. Iran also said additional talks could proceed afterward on an agenda accepted by both sides.
Trump told reporters at the White House on September 26 that he had rejected the proposal. He said Iran was seeking a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz immediately because it had been put at a disadvantage in the war. Araghchi, however, said Iran had not received formal notice through the mediators that the U.S. had rejected the offer and was waiting for Washington’s final position.
