Ethereum's 'Glamsterdam' Upgrade Activated on Sepolia Testnet in Final Check Before Mainnet

Source

Summary

  • Ethereum's next major upgrade, "Glamsterdam," was activated on the Sepolia testnet, marking one of the final major checkpoints before its mainnet rollout.
  • The upgrade aims to increase network throughput by separating block proposal and block construction roles, while organizing account and storage data to give validators more time for verification and enable parallel processing.
  • The Ethereum Foundation is also pursuing a plan to set a gas-limit floor of 200 million, which could raise network processing capacity from the current level of about 60 million, with the mainnet rollout to be finalized after testing on the Hoodi testnet.

Ethereum's next major upgrade, known as "Glamsterdam," has been activated on the Sepolia testnet in one of the final major checks ahead of its mainnet rollout.

Cointelegraph reported on October 6 that the Glamsterdam upgrade went live on the Sepolia testnet at 1:53 p.m. UTC.

The upgrade is focused on improving the Ethereum mainnet's processing efficiency and scalability. Its key changes include separating the role of proposing blocks from the role of constructing them, and pre-organizing information on accounts and storage accessed during block processing to make parallel execution easier.

The aim is to give validators more time to verify transaction results while increasing network throughput by allowing multiple transactions to be processed simultaneously.

The Ethereum Foundation is also pursuing a plan under the Glamsterdam upgrade to set a gas-limit floor of 200 million. That would be a sharp increase from the current level of about 60 million and could raise the network's processing capacity after the upgrade.

After the Sepolia test, developers plan to decide when to activate the upgrade on the Hoodi testnet and then finalize the timing of the mainnet rollout.

Glamsterdam is the latest major upgrade following Fusaka, which was implemented last year. After it goes live on the mainnet, development of the next upgrade, "Hegotá," is set to begin in earnest.
