Attention is turning to a possible sale after an early Ethereum investor moved part of a holding that had remained largely untouched for about 11 years.

On-chain analyst EmberCN said on October 26 that a whale investor who participated in Ethereum’s 2015 initial coin offering transferred a total of 5,000 ETH to an external wallet over the past two hours.

The investor bought 100,000 ETH in the 2015 ICO at $0.311 apiece. The total investment was about $31,000, making the holder one of Ethereum’s early large-scale investors. In 2016, the investor sold half the holdings, or 50,000 ETH, at $5.47 each. The sale was worth about $274,000, representing roughly a 17-fold return on the purchase price.

The remaining 50,000 ETH had apparently been held for about 11 years without notable movement. That changed recently when 5,000 ETH was transferred.

Of the moved amount, 1,500 ETH was deposited to a centralized exchange, or CEX. The tokens were worth about $3.45 million.

Exchange deposits are typically interpreted as a sign of potential selling. However, no actual sale has been confirmed. The purpose of the remaining 3,500 ETH transfer is also unknown.
