The U.S. government has been revealed to have sold a stake in artificial intelligence startup Anthropic tied to executives of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, which collapsed in 2022, for about $630 million.

BeInCrypto and other outlets reported on October 28 that Anthropic disclosed in a recent S-1 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it repurchased 4,453,900 shares of Series B preferred stock from the U.S. government in October 2025.

The repurchase price was about $140.97 a share. Anthropic then resold the shares to nine investment firms at the same price and said the transaction generated no net proceeds for the company.

The filing did not identify the existing shareholder by name. The stake, however, is known to match shares acquired through a $50 million investment made in 2022 by former Alameda Research Chief Executive Officer Caroline Ellison and former FTX executive Nishad Singh. The stake was later transferred to the U.S. government through a court-ordered forfeiture process.

BeInCrypto reported that the U.S. Department of Justice transferred the proceeds from the Anthropic stake sale to the FTX bankruptcy estate late last year. It added that the funds were assigned to the FTX bankruptcy estate and would be used for victim recovery.

A Justice Department official said one of the department's top priorities is returning funds seized through its asset forfeiture program to victims.

Separately, the stake was distinct from Anthropic investment shares sold by the FTX bankruptcy estate for about $1.3 billion in 2024.
