President Donald Trump signaled the US could launch additional strikes on Iran’s military facilities, escalating military pressure on Tehran.

AFP and other outlets reported on October 31 that Trump, speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, said most of Iran’s military capability had been destroyed. He added that one or two targets still remained and could be eliminated in about 10 minutes.

Trump cited "Pickaxe Mountain," described as an underground Iranian nuclear facility, as a possible target for further action. He also expressed confidence that a military operation against the site could be carried out quickly.

The comments came three days before the US midterm elections, as the possibility of renewed airstrikes on Iran has drawn attention. MS Now previously reported that the Trump administration had told Gulf allies to prepare for the possibility of airstrikes on November 4, the day after the midterm vote.

Trump also left open the possibility of diplomatic talks with Iran. He said negotiations through a mediating country were progressing smoothly, but added that he had little trust in Tehran and would wait to see whether an agreement is actually reached.

Earlier, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said at a Group of 20 foreign ministers' meeting that Trump had not made a final decision on additional military action against Iran. Rubio also said the US government was giving priority to resolving the issue through diplomacy rather than a military response.

As Washington continues negotiations with Iran while stepping up military pressure, attention is focused on whether it will ultimately carry out airstrikes after the midterm elections.
