A former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent stole $2,474,380 in cryptocurrency secured during an investigation, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

On Nov. 7, the U.S. District Court in Virginia accepted a guilty plea from former FBI agent Patrick Stephen Yarochi on wire fraud and money laundering charges, the Justice Department said.

Yarochi is accused of using access information for crypto wallets obtained during an FBI investigation to make roughly 100 unauthorized transfers totaling $2,474,380 starting in December 2024.

He exchanged the stolen crypto for other digital assets or moved it through multiple accounts to conceal the source of the funds. Investigators said some of the money was used to pay personal debts, including credit-card bills and auto loan payments.

Yarochi is scheduled to be sentenced on March 4, 2027, and could face up to 20 years in prison.
