Anthropic is buying large-scale gas generators to secure the electricity needed to run its data centers.

Bloomberg reported on November 9, citing the Financial Times, that Anthropic signed a $3.4 billion deal to secure gas generators for data centers. It is the largest known single purchase of power-generation equipment by an AI developer.

In late September, Anthropic assumed a contract to buy 1.7 gigawatts of large generators from OnePWR Solutions, a San Antonio, Texas-based power equipment supplier. It did not acquire OnePWR Solutions itself.

Anthropic had initially pursued a plan to receive electricity from OnePWR Solutions. It later changed course and moved to secure the company's Caterpillar generator order contracts directly.

The deal highlights how AI companies are moving directly into the energy sector to secure the power equipment needed to operate data centers. With supplies constrained, the strategy is aimed at locking in generation equipment without going through intermediaries.

Anthropic has until now relied on outside partners for electricity, semiconductors, data centers and sites. As demand for AI infrastructure surges, it is expanding its strategy to gain more direct control over core equipment.

The company has previously said it plans to spend more than $895 billion over the coming years. Most of that investment is slated for AI computing costs and related infrastructure buildout.
